Love is one of the most used words in the world, yet Scripture gives it a meaning far deeper than a feeling, a mood, or a phrase.

That is what makes the Love Is design worth slowing down to explain. This short phrase is built around three passages that teach love from different angles: 1 John 3:18, 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, and 1 John 4:7-12. Together, they show that love is, holy, visible, and rooted in GOD.
The design is not meant to reduce love to a slogan. It is meant to hold up a mirror. When someone reads the title “Love Is,” the words invite a question: What does love look like when Scripture defines it?
This Behind the Design post walks through the meaning behind the shirt, why these verses were placed together, and how the design points back to a love that is not only spoken but also lived.
The Words "Love Is" Encourages Exploration
The catalyst for this design came from a Bible study discussion on John Chapter 21. In this chapter, Jesus is speaking with Simon Peter and asks him three times whether he loves Him. Each time, Simon Peter responds "Yes, I love you." But what stood out was the emotional weight of the third time that Jesus asked him. The text indicates that Simon Peter was grieved after Jesus asked him the third time. This sparked a week-long study of the word love in the Bible that led to the formulation of a definition that resonates deeply: Love is the active showing of, and desire for, the beneficial well-being of someone other than self. This definition encapsulates the essence of love as an action-oriented force rather than a mere sentiment.
The phrase Love Is feels unfinished on purpose. It does not rush to define love by culture, emotion, or personal preference. It leaves space for Scripture to answer.
That choice matters because many people define love by what it gives them. Love becomes approval, attraction, agreement, or comfort. Those things may appear around love, but they do not fully define it. The Bible gives a fuller picture.
Several Bible verses are in this design to support and illustrate this idea.
Understanding the Message Behind the Shirt
First there is 1 John 3:18, where John provides a clear directive to love not merely through words, but through action. This verse emphasizes the importance of tangible expressions of love, suggesting that true love is demonstrated through deeds rather than proclamations. It challenges believers to reflect on the authenticity of their love and encourages a lifestyle that embodies the principles of kindness and generosity.
The next scripture I believe that many know well is 1 Corinthians Chapter 13, often referred to as the "Love Chapter." This passage shares the characteristics of love, such as, stating that love is patient, love is kind, and love is not self-seeking. Each attribute provides a framework for understanding how love manifests in our daily interactions. The chapter serves as a reminder that love is not just an emotion but a commitment to act in ways that nurture and uplift others, reinforcing the notion that love is foundational to our relationships.
The design finishes with a reading from the book of 1 John Chapter 4, which articulates that GOD is the very source of love. This scripture not only identifies GOD as love itself but also instructs us to love one another. The implication is that when we extend love to others, it signifies the presence of GOD within us and serves as a testament to our relationship with HIM. This is the reciprocal nature of love. Receiving it from GOD and then sharing it with others.
Additional Context
The Bible has plenty to say about love, with various Greek and Hebrew words such as agapaō, phileō, and 'āhaḇ being translated into our English word "love," each carrying distinct connotations and nuances. These terms enrich our understanding of love's multifaceted nature and its application in different contexts. The scriptures selected for this design were chosen intentionally to clarify the type of love that believers are called to exemplify in their lives. Loving others being more than just a command or duty; it is through our actions that GOD's love is made visible to the world. This understanding invites the believer to actively participate in love, transforming it from a concept into a lived reality that reflects the heart of GOD.
